Westlaw Japan K.K. (Address: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Young Sun Bang, referred to as Westlaw Japan) has signed an affiliation agreement with the Advanced Business Law Program of the University of Tokyo Graduate Schools for Law and Politics. With this agreement, we aim to deepen our collaboration and further contribute to the enrichment of legal education and research within the Advanced Business Law Program.
By cooperating with other stakeholders in the field of business law in the broad sense, such as graduate schools on engineering or on information science and technology, the Advanced Business Law Program provides various designated classes that consider both practical and theoretical/comparative legal perspectives. Professionals and young businesspersons are welcomed in addition to students aspiring to become researchers, which strengthens mutual interaction and stimulation. The program aims to promote the establishment of a superior site for continued interaction, fostering outstanding talent, and creating new joint researches.
Westlaw Japan, as a leading legal information services provider in Japan, has been working to serve as a strategic partner for educational institutions, governmental agencies, companies, and all engaged in the legal business for 15 years since its establishment.

After the signing ceremony, Professor Yoshiyuki Tamura of the University of Tokyo Graduate Schools for Law and Politics said, “The Advanced Business Law Program literally aims to provide personnel who can tackle the most advanced business issues globally. It is very meaningful that we can cooperate with Westlaw Japan which leads the world in legal research and has the most advanced knowledge on legal tech. We would not only like to receive advice on the educational content of this program, but also hold various events together.”
Westlaw Japan will collaborate as an external entity regarding the Advanced Business Law Program’s education and cooperate on items such as seminars. We will continue to contribute to the Japan legal community by meeting the demands of the society.
■ The Advanced Business Law Program
The Advanced Business Law Program takes part in the World-leading Innovative Graduate Study Program within the University of Tokyo. With the Law and Politics Major of the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics at the center, the program was established in April 2017. Since 2019, it has been selected for the WISE Program (Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In the rapidly changing field of business law in the broad sense, the five-year program works closely with practitioners and aims to enhance graduate school education from both aspects—theoretical study and acquiring of knowledge related to practical affairs. Up until now, Hitachi, Fuji Film, Softbank, Yahoo, Nissay, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, Harvard University, Peking University, Seoul National University, Taiwan University, and others have been the program’s affiliated entities.
